Kunsthaus KUBO

KUBO (Kultur- und Bildungsverein Ostertor e.V.) sees itself as a place of encounter with art. As an art house, we unite hands-on studio work with exhibition-based engagement under one roof. We create spaces for reflection and foster aesthetic competence. Children, young people, and adults can discover their own artistic approach in our studio courses, guided by their current needs and at their own pace. Personal development is at the center and is professionally supported by artists.

Galerie Mitte, through its exhibition program, focuses on positions in contemporary art and offers a broader framework with a range of accompanying events.

KUBO has been a firmly rooted part of Bremen’s cultural scene for over 40 years. It was founded in 1981 as a cultural neighborhood center. At the time, we published a local newspaper (Ostertorwiese) and actively engaged in neighborhood politics. Initially, we hosted community initiatives, peace and anti-nuclear groups, cultural actors, a children's theater, and music groups. After a fire, we reopened in 1985 and gradually evolved into a house for the visual arts—starting with a space dedicated to children and youth, followed by workshops, a summer academy, weekend exhibitions, and the KUBO Art Prize. Through our art projects, we began to shape and publicly define our identity as a dedicated art venue. In 2009, renovations reinforced the dual pillars of our institution: the 140 m² Galerie Mitte on the ground floor and the 140 m² studio for aesthetic education upstairs. The founding members remain closely connected to KUBO and currently serve on the board.

KUBO is a non-profit organization funded by the Senator for Culture of the State of Bremen. The core of our association’s work is the promotion of art and artists, as well as cultural and artistic education.
